Swirls of Jupiter

The Swirls of Jupiter (Satellite Edition) is a group of friends who play together locally and across the state, combining their talent and love of music to share it with the world.

Chuk Barber (WAR, Lowrider Band, California Honeydrops), Manuel (Silky) Mayer, Calin Uhlig and Malia Tippets are accomplished musicians who bring skill and color to some timeless Classics from various genres and popular artists like James Taylor, Amy Winehouse, Sting, John Mayer and Ed Sheeran. Like the ease of an intoxicating fine wine or mellow craft beer,  the journey they take you on is both outer worldly and firmly planted in the roots of familiar musical Terra here on earth. They are truly not to be missed.

Atmosphere and sexy funk!

“The perfect group to add a little live music charm to your restauarant, bar or event. Our regulars love this group and we get a handful of people coming just to hear them play”.

The Players

While we are lucky to be joined by some of the city’s best guest artists, The Swirls of Jupiter is comprised of the following core members.

Chuk Barber

A student of legendary jazz drummer, Hal Blaine, Chuk Barber has had sticks in his hands for over 40 years. He’s played with some of New Orleans greatest musicians and bands including: Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Sun Ra, Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe, Anders Osbome, Big Al Carson, Kid Merv, Jand onas Risin. Since 1997, he has been the percussionist for the Platinum Recording group WAR, (aka the LowRider Band). He continues to tour with the Low Riders, while continuing to bring his driving energy to the Swirls of Jupiter.

Dan Gildea

Dan Gildea is a sizzling guitarist with a cool core. His playing is informed by jazz, moved by soul, and fired with urgency. You can find him playing music he cares about (with people he cares about) at intimate clubs, large concerts, and festivals. Although he has toured Europe, Canada, and the US, he prefers playing music with the large pool of immensely talented musicians in his home town. Portland, OR.

Jeff Langston

Jeff Langston first picked up the bass at age 16 in Eugene, OR. In 1992 he moved to Boston, MA to study music performance at Berklee College of Music. In 1996 he moved to NYC, where he played venues ranging from CBGB’s to Carnegie Hall with many diverse artists, including Antony and the Johnsons, LP, Soulfarm, Lou Reed, and many more. Jeff has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, Australia, and South America. Music featuring his bass playing was used in the movie V for Vendetta. Some highlights of his television performances include the Late Show with David Letterman, Live at Abbey Road, and the Jonathon Ross Show. In 2009 he relocated back to the Pacific Northwest. You can find him playing around Portland with the Kivett Bednar Band, Rachel Taylor Brown, Red Bird, Mo Phillips, The RUSH Collective, Wanderlodge and many other regional artists.

Malia Tippets

Serving up songs with style and a smile, Malia brings her charisma from years of professional theatre to the music she was born to sing.

Malia has a background in Musical Theatre and continues to perform in shows around the Portland area.

Manuel “Silky” Mayer

Mayer is a veteran pro musician who has toured internationally, and gives the Portland music scene his unique soulful styling to originals, smooth rock and jazz covers. In 2011, Silky teamed up with longtime friend and percussionist Chuk Barber to form the “Where’s Danny?” Band, and has performed with Portland blues legend Curtis Salgado. In addition to his work with Swirls of Jupiter, Silky is also a regular vocalist/guitarist with the bands The Executive Groove, and the Denominators, as well as a frequent guest artist with Fenix Rising.

Calen Uhlig

In memoriam

We lost Calen suddenly in 2023. He was a well loved and much respected musician in the Portland area and beyond and he will be missed greatly. All our love to his friends and family.
